Ghana has appointed striker Asamoah Gyan as the permanent captain of the senior national male soccer team, the Black Stars.

Experienced defender John Mensah, who was hitherto the skipper, has been elevated to the role of a general captain of the side, according to a statement issued by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Monday.

"I have the pleasure of announcing that defender John Mensah has been elevated to the general captain of the Black Stars," Kwasi Appiah said.

"Subsequently, I have appointed Asamoah Gyan as the permanent captain of the Black Stars."

Appiah said John Mensah remains an integral member of the Black Stars, urging all players to give the necessary support to Asamoah Gyan to help Ghana achieve success in future challenges.

Gyan was the stand-in captain when Ghana played Malawi in the first-leg qualifying match of the 2013 African Cup of Nations in Accra on September 8.

He announced his decision to return to the Black Stars last July, after a five-month absence.

The UAE-based Al Ain striker retired from the senior team through a statement to the GFA in February this year, saying he was frustrated over the verbal abuse he had received after playing for the country at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.

The tricky striker has scored 28 goals in 59 games for Ghana.
