Haitian President Michel Martelly on Monday unveiled a new industrial park in northern Haiti.

Located between Haiti's second-largest city, Cap Haitian, and the northern border with the Dominican Republic, the park Caracol, with an area of 250 hectares, is the largest in the country.

It was designed as an integrated development model for the impoverished land which is still struggling to recover from the devastating earthquake of January 2010, which killed 222,570 people.

"This is a historic day for Haiti," Martelly said at the opening ceremony also attended by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her husband US ex-president Bill Clinton, now a UN special envoy for Haiti.

"Rather than receiving aid, it is time for sustainable development of the country," said Martelly, adding "Haiti is open for business."

Jointly financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Clinton Foundation, the industrial park has already hosted a South Korean textile company, which has hired and trained hundreds of Haitian workers to manufacture garments for the US market.

A paint factory is going to open next month. The park is expected to create more than 5,000 jobs by the end of 2013.

"The model of Caracol can still be introduced to other parts of the country," said Martelly.
