Anti-drug chiefs from the American Police Community (Ameripol) gathered here on Wednesday to discuss regional challenges of the drug war.

Opening the first meeting of Anti-Drug Directors and Symposium on Controlling Illegal Drugs, Defense Minister Juan Carlos Pinzon said support and cooperation among countries throughout the Americas have been "essential" for tackling the issue.

The meeting, attended by 18 member countries of Ameripol, aims to share experiences and lessons learned by national police agencies in the anti-drug fight, discuss different tactics and propose ways to strengthen cooperation and joint anti-drug operations, said Pinzon.

He added that during the meeting, Colombia's National Police will present its Integral Intervention Anti-Drug Strategy, which was designed to maximize prevention, eradication and interdiction operations by promoting the use of technology in the drug fight.
