"It's good for the public to discuss PM2.5. Beijing is a metropolis undergoing rapid development and faces challenges in coping with environmental problems."

Du Shaozhong, former spokesman and deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau, welcomes the municipal government's decision last month to release data on PM2.5, or air pollutants with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or less. Du's comments were published in a Tuesday report by The Beijing Morning Post. Du made headlines in November last year when he criticized the US embassy for generating "hype" by reporting Beijing's PM2.5 data. (Source: The Beijing Morning Post)
