Officials of the Lingang area of Pudong New Area are seeking to build up the coastal area's tourism bona fides over the next four years with duty free shopping and a couple of theme parks, officials said at a press conference Thursday.

As one of Shanghai's newer development zones, Lingang is planning to build a Universal Studios-like theme park called Shanghai International Studios and a marine theme park similar to Sea World.

"We expect to attract 6 million tourists by 2016," said Zhu Jiajun, director of the Lingang Area Development and Construction Administrative Committee.

Lingang officials made the announcements at an annual inspection of the Shanghai Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

Located in the southeastern corner of Shanghai, Lingang sits on 315 square kilometers  of land, including 13 kilometers of coastline, that was once coastal wetlands. It is a 90-minute drive from the center of the city. The Shanghai Municipal Government started developing Lingang in 2003. It is now home to 60,000 residents.

Lingang officials also intend to continue to promote the area as a base for advanced manufacturing industries. They plan to focus on developing the area's civil aircraft industry, LED and remanufacturing industries over the next five years. They expect to attract 80 billion yuan ($12.81 billion) in fixed asset investment by 2016.

The China Commercial Aircraft Company assembly and manufacturing center is in Lingang area. The company plans to finish its first ARJ21 regional aircraft by 2014 and first C919 passenger aircraft by 2017.
