A broadcast journalist was killed by a gunman in Cabanatuan city in the northern Philippine province of Nueva Ecija Thursday morning.

City police chief Supt. Eli Depra said radio commentator Julius Causon was aboard a motorcycle and was on his way to radio station DWJJ when he was shot by a lone suspect who was also riding a motorcycle at around 7 a.m.

"(Causon) was tailed and shot at the back three times," said Depra.

The 51-year-old broadcaster was brought to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police could not say whether the killing was related to his work as a broadcast journalist.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines said Causon's death brings to 14 the total number of media practitioners who were killed since President Benigno Aquino III assumed office in 2010.

Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a news briefing that the government condemns the killing of Causon.

Lacierda assured that the government will do everything it can to put the suspect behind bars.
