Two people have been killed and 14 others injured in an attack launched by the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) on a civilian convoy in Phakant township, Myanmar's northernmost Kachin state over the last two days, the Kachin state government confirmed Friday.

The convoy comprised five vehicles carrying 78 convicts from Phakant detention center to Myitkyina detention center and 108 other detainees to be sent to Monhyin detention center along with money from local Myanma Economic Bank branch.

The convoy was first attacked by two roadside mines near 5th Mile village of Lonekhin village-tract in Phakant earlier on Wednesday, leaving no damage, the sources said.

As they were heading to the destinations, the convoy was ambushed by the 30-member KIA group, leaving two dead and 14 others injured from the vehicles, the sources added.

On October 30, peace-making groups of the government and the KIA met for continued peace talks in Ruili, a border town in China's southwestern Yunnan province that links Myanmar's Muse, but reportedly produced no tangible outcome.
