Nile virus death toll reaches 9 in Tunisia

An old woman died and four more cases of Nile virus infection were discovered in Tunisia's northern governorate of Bizerta on Tuesday, bringing the death toll to nine people across the country, local media reported.

At least 58 people have been infected by the virus and are currently being treated in regional hospitals, a medical source told Xinhua, adding that several cases have been recently discovered in the governorate of Jendouba, where two people were reported to have died of the virus.

So far, the virus has affected eight governorates, including 11 cases in Monastir, 16 in Gabes, 13 in Kebili, five in Jendouba, six in Mahdia, four in Bizerta, two in Sousse and one in Tozeur.

Most of the people infected are elderly persons living in rural areas.
