Multiple mortar shells struck a residential area in the Syrian capital Damascus Thursday morning, causing material damage and some injuries, pro-government media and activists said.

The shells slammed a residential building and the vicinity of a school in the upscale district of al-Mazzeh, causing some minor injuries only.

The sprawling district has been caught in the fire between Syrian troops and rebel fighters, who are waging their attacks from the adjacent Kafar Souseh and Daraya district.

Several mortar shells have hit parts of al-Mazzeh over the past couple of weeks.

The latest incident comes as the clashes and fighting are still going on in the southern suburbs of Damascus with no sign of abating despite the government troops' incessant operations there.

The violence in Syria has been dragging on since last year, sending people on edge with the failure of international efforts to put an end to it.
