Sudan's ruling National Congress Party (NCP) on Thursday confirmed that there was a failed military coup attempt by military and civilian elements aimed at seizing the power in the country.

"The Sudanese security organs have aborted a military coup attempt by military and opposition elements who were planning to seize the power in the country," Rabie Abul-Atti, a leading NCP member, told Xinhua.

"Some elements involved in the coup attempt have been arrested for investigation," he added, without disclosing the identity of the arrested elements.

Earlier Thursday a security source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity that the Sudanese security authorities arrested former chief of National Intelligence and Security Service, Salah Abdallah Gosh, and some other officers of the security organ and army in the wake of a foiled military coup attempt.

"Military and civilians who were behind the aborted attempt were arrested," the source said.

Meanwhile, the Sudanese Media Center earlier reported that "the Sudanese security and intelligence organs early Thursday aborted a conspiracy targeting the country's security," adding that "this conspiracy is led by officials in the opposition parties."

It further said the security organ has been following up the sabotage plot, adding that the concerned authorities have embarked on security procedures and investigations.
