Thirty-seven Cambodians were killed by malaria in the first ten months of this year, representing a 42 percent decrease compared with 64 deaths at the same period last year, a report of the National Center for Malaria Control showed Saturday.

During the January-October period this year, 59,104 malaria cases had been reported, down 32 percent from 86,964 cases at the same period last year, the report said.

The declines in death toll and infected cases were thanks to awareness campaigns and mosquito net distribution to the disease- prone groups of people, Dr. Char Meng Chuor, the director of the center, said.

He added that the death cases were due to the patients had sought private treatment and when the treatment was ineffective and the condition became more severe, they continued seeking treatment at public hospitals, but it was too late to be cured.

Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease. In Cambodia, the disease is often found in rainy season and mostly happens in border provinces, and forest and mountainous provinces.

Dr. Meng Chuor said that the country is committed to eradicating the death from malaria by 2015. With this target, it needs the total budget of $131 million.

In the whole year of 2011, the disease killed 98 people in the country.
