Toddler death adds to Indonesia's avian flu toll to 160: ministry

The recent death of a toddler aged 4 years old in Bogor, West Java province has added to casualties from bird flu to 160 from 192 cases found in Indonesia, a statement released by Indonesian health ministry said on Monday.

Disease Control and Environment Sanitary Directorate General at Indonesian health ministry said the new bird flu case involving a toddler, who goes by initial name IT, that led to the death of the toddler was confirmed by the country's biomedics and health basis technology (Balitbankes) agency.

The male toddler lived in Nagreg hamlet, Gorowong village, Parung Panjang subdistrict in Bogor regency, West Java. He was initially diagnosed with cold fever on Nov. 30 and treated in local public health service center.

"After undertaking epidemiology examination in hospitals where he was treated at, house and environment he was living at, local health ministry's officials learned on the possibility of risk factor that he had direct contacts with carcasses of avian, in this case was a duck, in his house," the health ministry's spokesperson Murti Utami said in the statement.

She said that Indonesia had confirmed the latest case to World Health Organization (WHO).
