Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said Monday that there is no possibility of military attack against the Islamic republic by the West, semi- official Mehr news agency reported.

Iran is in the best defensive condition and in case the West intends to attack the country, it will face grave loss, said Mehmanparast, adding that for the same reason the West dares not to attack Iran militarily.

Therefore, they are targeting the economy of the country by imposing sanctions, he was quoted as saying.

By sanctions they want to put the people under pressure and to create social discontent, said the Iranian spokesman, concluding that creating conflicts within the Islamic establishment is their virtual aim.

Iran is under a number of unilateral Western sanctions on its oil and financial sectors over its controversial nuclear program.

The United States and its Western allies have accused Iran of secretly developing nuclear weapons under the guise of its civilian nuclear program, a charge Tehran has consistently denied.
