The Red Poppy Ladies, China's first female-only percussion group, will make its debut in New York City Wednesday with a classic Chinese tale which was made a blockbuster animation by Disney in 1998.

Mulan the Musical tells the story of a Chinese maiden who disguised herself as a man and joined the military to save her ailing father for the recruitment.

"We are excited to be making our US debut in New York," said producer William Meade. "This is a unique theatrical experience for the whole family and we are happy to present Mulan the Musical in time for the holidays."

He said the show is so unusual, because it's not an opera, nor Chinese acrobatics. "It's a very unusual show and has a lot of appeal to the Americans."

Meade expressed his fascination with Chinese culture, saying China is bound to create more culture contents over the next decade, as the government is encouraging more.

"Chinese have more international traveling, and the country is really opening up. In addition, many Chinese organizations are working very hard to create something of appeal to the West," he said.

The Beijing-based Red Poppy Laddies has performed in world famous venues like the Sydney Opera House and the Kennedy Center, as well as for the closing ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

The group won the "World Peace" prize at the World Culture Open in Seoul in 2004.
