The 2012 annual award ceremony of "China Automotive Industry Science and Technology Award" was held in Beijing on December 1. Geely's project titled "Geely Car Safety Technology R&D and Industrialization" was awarded the first prize, which, as the highest award in China's automotive industry, was given to a specialized technology for the first time, rather than a specific model like before.

Geely has made fruitful effort in safety technology in recent years. According to data on passive safety released by Geely Research Institute, the Panda, the Emgrand EC7 and EC7 received five-star rating respectively in C-NCAP crash tests. In 2011, the EC7 earned four stars in an E-NCAP crash test with a score close to five stars as China's first homegrown model receiving the rating. In 2012, the automaker's first SUV model the GX7 was rated five-plus stars in a C-NCAP test as the only five-plus-star homegrown model, which was ranked number four among 172 models assessed in the test.

With regard to active safety, Geely's independent innovation the Blow-out Monitoring and Brake System (BMCS), which can reduce blowout-caused risks on highways, has been applied to many of the its models and will be used more. Apart from this, it will apply more active safety technologies including Antilock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). Particularly, the EC7 was equipped with the ESC system when it was assessed in the 2011 E-NCAP crash test.

The company has begun to implement strategic transformation by setting "creating the safest, most environmentally-friendly and most energy-efficient cars" as its mission, said Dr. Zhao Fuquan, Vice President of Geely Holding Group and Director of Geely Research Institute. In order to fulfill the mission, the Institute has given top priority to safety as a hallmark of the company's products and put its research findings into practice regarding both active and passive safety.

Dr. Zhao pointed out that Geely should develop its own R&D system in addition to mastering safety technologies. Today the company has organized a safety R&D team of over 500 engineers, who have contributed to its safety technology development directly or indirectly. Having set up a world-class safety center, the automaker has achieved the capacity for testing all the car models under both China's and EU's evaluation system, built comprehensive R&D procedures for safety systems so as to evaluate safety performance, cost and quality control in the course of car development, and established the Geely Total Safety Management (GTSM) system to ensure overall safety performance from concept car design to after-sales service. All the efforts have made its breakthroughs in core safety technology possible.

According to statistics published, Geely has received nearly 20 industry awards at state or provincial level and obtained more than 400 patents in the field of safety technology.
