Indian police arrest 5th accused in gangrape case

Indian police have nabbed the fifth accused in the horrific gangrape of a 23-year-old woman medical student by six people on a moving bus in the Indian capital Sunday, a top police official said Friday.

Four of the six accused, including the bus driver, have already been arrested by the police in connection with the gangrape of the Delhi University medical student who is currently battling for her life at a local hospital. The sixth accused is till on the run even as police have launched a massive manhunt to track him down.

"The fifth accused has been arrested in the rape case. His age is being verified before giving details. If (he is a) minor, we have to hold back his particulars as per law," Delhi Police chief Neeraj Kumar told the media.

The gangrape has triggered outrage and mass protests in India, with protesters demanding death penalty for the accused and stringent laws to deal with such heinous crimes in the future.

The woman victim was gangraped by six people on a moving bus and beaten up, along with her boyfriend, by the culprits mercilessly before they were being thrown out of the vehicle half- naked in the dead of the night Sunday.

The duo had boarded the bus from the south of the national capital after watching a movie at a multiplex.
