The oldest Cuban hydro power station, founded a century ago, has reopened in the western Pinar del Rio province after receiving modern Chinese equipments, the official daily Juventud Rebelde (Rebel Youth) reported Tuesday.

The power station was built in 1912, next to the small town of Pilotos, marking the beginning of the use of clean energy on the island. It is considered the pioneer in the country and one of the oldest hydro power stations in Latin America.

Repairing of the station started in 2010. The installation of

Chinese-made generator, electric panels and speed regulator allowed the station to reach the generation capacity of 270 kw/h, Pinar del Rio Hydro-energy Director, Olga Lidia Bazart, was quoted by Juventud Rebelde as saying.

The Cuban government encourages the use of clean energy as a way to achieve sustainable energy sources and protect environment.
