A Syrian official source on Wednesday denied as "baseless" media reports that the rebels have taken control over a military airport in the northern province of Idlib, the state-run SANA news agency reported.

The source said such reports aim to lift the morale of the armed groups, adding that army units tasked with protecting the Taftanas airport have repulsed the armed groups' attack, dealing fatal blows to the assailants who have waged their attacks from several directions.

Earlier in the day, local media said armed groups attacked Taftanas airport, adding that government troops repulsed the huge attack and rendered many of the assailants killed or injured.

The airport is a top priority for the rebels who hope for taking over it and paralyzing the power of the Syrian air force in the northern slice of Syria.
