Parts of China have reported record-low temperatures in the past few weeks, and Beijing is experiencing its coldest weather in the past three decades. While keeping warm in a thick, stuffed overcoat seems practical, a few fun and stylish accessories will turn up the heat and help you stand out from the crowd right through spring.
Powered by USB ports, lithium batteries and a little creativity, these accessories, all available on the online retailer Taobao, come at reasonable prices.
However convenient, keep in mind that all electronically-heated devices run the risk of becoming a fire hazard, so use wisely and avoid overuse.
1. Hi-Call Bluetooth Glove, 600 yuan ($96)
These gloves allow smartphone users to talk right into their hands in the freezing cold weather. Just make the "call me" sign and you're in business with these, as a speaker is sewn into the pinkie of the glove and an earpiece into the thumb. Whenever calls come in, users can press controls placed on the wrist. The gloves' fabric is also touch-screen sensitive, allowing users to navigate their smartphones and handy electronic gadgets without ever taking the gloves off.
Created by the Italian company hi-Fun, producer of a number of iPod and iPhone accessories, the gloves can be charged via a mini USB port built into the gloves, and the battery is said to last up to 10 days. Although the gloves are currently available in only gray and black, they are compatible with all Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones.
2. UGG boots heated by lithium battery, 150 yuan
For anyone daring enough to crunch through the snow in the freezing, -26 C conditions of northeastern city Harbin, lithium battery-powered UGG boots, which stay toasty at around 60 degrees with one charge, could be the perfect choice.
Like walking on a never-ending heated floor, it's the latest upgrade for the unisex boot which took China by storm in 2009 and hasn't let up since. The wires embedded in the insoles of the boots can be heated up within minutes via an adaptor. The heat emanates from the soles and up to the body for a cozy but not scalding wave of heat. One charge is advertised to last four to five hours.
3. Rechargeable electric insoles, 30 yuan
UGG boots are warm and comfortable, but perhaps not suited for every occasion. A pair of rechargeable electric insoles can keep your feet warm, even in a pair of stilettos.
The electric insoles, heated with a lithium battery and rechargeable with the included Li-lon adaptor, weigh only 150 grams, making them your warm little secret. With the temperature set around 42 C, they can warm up not only the feet, but the legs and the whole body.
The lithium battery will turn on automatically as you walk, and then off again when you take the shoes off. The battery, which can be recharged via the adaptor with an extra plug into a constant current, is said to last up to five hours.
4. USB-powered leg warmers, 450 yuan
Originally used by ballet dancers to warm up their leg muscles and keep them injury-free, leg warmers have become a popular accessory for fashionistas worldwide. Without sacrificing stylish sensibilities, Japanese designers came up with an updated version for staying extra warm in freezing weather.
The USB-powered leg warmers are especially designed for those who need to put in long hours at the office, close to a computer. The 42-centimeter leggings have wires within them that, while plugged into a USB port, will stay quite warm.
When not plugged in, the leggings still look cute, as the USB cord can be tucked away discreetly.
