Two local Taliban leaders killed in Afghan operations

Two local Taliban leaders have been killed in separate military operations carried out by the Afghan forces and the NATO-led coalition troops, the coalition forces said on Tuesday.

"In Khugyani district, Nangarhar province, today (Tuesday), the Afghan and coalition security force killed two insurgents, including the Taliban leader Khanjar. Khanjar, also known as Izat and Abu Khaled, had directed attacks against Afghan government officials and Afghan and coalition forces in the district," the coalition said in a press release issued here.

The security force also arrested a local Taliban leader who oversaw the transfer and delivery of weapons and ammunition to insurgents in the operation in Nangarhar, 160 km east of Afghan capital Kabul.

Separatelyy, the joint forces killed a Taliban leader named Mohammad Sayed, and one other insurgent, during a security operation in Washer district in southern Helmand province, on Monday, according to the release.

Mohammad Sayed distributed weapons and ammunition to Taliban fighters. Prior to his death, Sayed was attempting to acquire rockets for attacks targeting Afghan government officials in the province 555 km south of Kabul, the press release noted.

Earlier Tuesday, in a separate operation, the joint forces arrested a Taliban weapons facilitator in Pul-e Khumri district, Baghlan province, some 160 km north of Kabul.

The Taliban insurgent group, which has been waging an insurgency of more than one decade, has yet to make comments.
