Outrage erupted after photos surfaced online showing primary school students in Rugao, Jiangsu Province being taught to use brooms and chairs as a means of defense in case of a campus knife attack.

In a school safety drill conducted by Rugao Frontier Inspection and Changxin Primary School, students rushed a door with brooms as an instructor, playing the part of a cleaver-carrying attacker, burst into the classroom, according to a caijing.com.cn report on January 7.

The exercise follows an incident of campus violence on December 14, where 23 kids were injured after a 36-year-old man named Min Yongjun attacked primary school students with a kitchen knife in Guangshan county, Henan Province.

@GMZT: If students confronted an attacker like this, there would be even more casualties.

@陌下飘雪: The most unrealistic part is that kids were waiting for the attacker at the door of their classroom, instead of being surprised by him. Students should retreat through the other door under the cover of the teacher and throw stuff at the intruder to slow him down.

@三好的鸡零狗碎: The school should not teach students to fight back. The smart thing to do is run away as soon as possible. That is not the right time be brave.

@滴血观音: The school should have better ways to keep the students safe, such as installing cameras near the school walls, doors with keycards and asking for ID at the school gate. I think children need better protection and teachers should focus on teaching.
