At least 11 people have been killed and dozens injured early Thursday in the latest inter-ethnic clashes in Kenya's Tana Delta, where at least ten people were hacked to death Wednesday.

Regional police commander Aggrey Adoli said the fresh attacks at Kibusu village, which took place at 7 a.m. (0400GMT) in southeast Kenya, were carried out by an unknown number of armed men in what appears to be a revenge mission.

"We have reported another attack but we have dispatched a team to access the situation to establish what triggered the attacks," Adoli told Xinhua by telephone on Thursday.

Hundred of villagers of Orma pastrolists and settled Pokomo farmers continue to flee the area with fears of retaliatory attacks despite presence of police officers in the area.

Police have ruled out limited resources in the area as cause of the skirmishes, blaming the politicians who are fighting to ascend to power in different position in presidential election on March 4.

The inter-tribal clashes in August and September last year were the culmination of smaller-scale attacks, cattle raids and counterattacks since January 2012 between the ethnic Pokomo and Orma communities.

Tensions remain high in the area following the new attacks between settled farmers and semi-nomadic Orma pastoralists who have clashed sporadically for years over access to grazing, farmland and water in the coastal region.

According to Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS), at least 11 houses were torched in Semikaro village by armed militia which carried crude weapons.

"The situation is tense in the area but we have sent a team to the area to attend to the injured in the attacks," KRCS Coast region chief Mwaisha Hamisi told Xinhua on phone.

The humanitarian agency said the number of those injured in the attack is yet to be confirmed, adding that its disaster response team has been dispatched to the ground to assess the situation.

Hamisi said most of the victims of the latest attack were burnt to death after their houses were torched by the attackers and the Red Cross team are checking burnt houses looking for bodies of those killed.

The latest skirmishes come as the police announced the arrest of three armed militia behind Wednesday's attack that left at least ten killed.

"We arrested three militia who sustained arrow and machetes injuries. The three will assist us with investigation for possible arrest of their accomplices," Adoli said.

Tension and rivalry between Pokomo and Orma communities which have been ongoing for decades resulted into the death of 120 people and over 5,000 displacements since August 2012.

The most recent clashes started on December 21, 2012, when a group of ethnic Pokomo, armed with spears and firearms, raided a village belonging to the Orma people.

Adoli announced that police will change the security strategy in the area following frequent attacks between the two warring communities of Orma pastrolist and Pokomo farmers.
