US-based Western Union on Saturday officially launched money transfer services in Myanmar.

Seven local private banks, which are authorized to operate money remittance services in the country, signed a deal with Western Union here on Saturday.

The service will offer Myanmar citizens a reliable and swift way to receive money from over 200 countries around the world, except North Korea, Somalia and Iran.

"We are glad to say that we are able to transfer from all over the world to Myanmar with reliable money transfer services. We are working with seven bank partners in Myanmar," Drina C. Yue, Managing Director and Senior Vice President of Western Union Company, Asia Pacific, told Xinhua.

"Western Union and its bank agents can successfully fulfill the needs of our 2 to 3 million overseas workers to send money back home in a reliable, safe and convenient way,"said Dr Maung Maung Thein, Deputy Minister of Finance and Revenue.
