More than 100 5-year-olds in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, were married Friday in a mock group wedding organized by their kindergarten, leaving some experts worried that the children are being taught too much too early about adult relationships.

Dressed in formal wedding attire, the brides and the bridegrooms walked down a red carpet while the Wedding Match was played.

They also received blessings from their parents, exchanged rings and kissed each other's cheek.

The Zhengzhou Yaolan Kindergarten said the activity will help raise the children's awareness of family values.

The wedding ceremony was also connected to early childhood sex education that explained how babies are made.

"We organized the mock wedding from our pupils' perspective and the pupils participated of their own will. The children are in a romantic, sensitive period and the ceremony can give them a chance to express their feelings," headmistress of the kindergarten, surnamed Li, told the Global Times.

Li said half the pupils' parents say their children often ask questions about marriage and love. "They are clueless about how to answer."

Li felt the kindergarten needed to arrange such an activity to help answer those questions.

"I think it is ridiculous and will mislead children in their understanding of marriage and sex," Wang Hongcai, an education professor at Xiamen University, told the Global Times.

Wang said he is worried the children are too young and might become precocious if they receive sex education too early. He said sex education should not be taught until students reach adolescences.

Some parents of young children discussing the issue online said they share Wang's concerns.

"I wouldn't support a mock wedding as I'm afraid it will make my boy lose his innocence," a mother of a 4-year-old in Zhengzhou, surnamed Huang, told the Global Times.

The kindergarten's headmistress said she organized a mock wedding for children in May 2012 and the parents welcomed it.

"I'd let my child participate if her kindergarten organized such an event. It will give my daughter a nice memory about marriage," Zhang Nan, a Beijing mother of a 3-year-old, told the Global Times Monday.

"It is too early to say if this mock wedding will influence the children's opinion on love and sex, as the ceremony is merely a game. This surely gives the children a sense of responsibility toward the family," Zhang added.

"This is a good chance to tell them what a healthy marriage concept is like, and let them learn how to be responsible in marriage," Li said.
