China is hopeful that recently signed agreements can restore peace to the Central African Republic, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Tuesday.

"We hope parties in the Central African Republic will observe and implement the agreements in a bid to help the country return to the track of stability and development at an early date," Hong Lei said at a daily press briefing.

Hong's comments came days after the signing of accords between the government of the Central African Republic and rebels on Friday.

Under the agreements, a new prime minister from the opposition will be named so that a national unity government can be formed to end the month-long political crisis. Legislative elections will be held within a year.

Hong said China is closely following the developing situation and has noticed the signing of agreements.

The spokesman said China welcomes the agreements as they have laid a foundation for a political solution to the crisis.

China would like to work with the international community and make efforts to help the Central African Republic seek long-lasting peace and stability, Hong said.
