A court in the Indian capital Wednesday convicted the former chief minister of the neighboring northern state of Haryana, Om Prakash Chautala, his son Abhay Chautala and 53 others in a scam involving recruitment of junior teachers more than 12 years ago.
The court convicted the 78-year-old former Haryana chief minister and 54 others after finding them guilty of illegally recruiting over 3,000 junior basic teachers in 2000, an official said, adding that Chautala was immediately taken into police custody after the order.
"The court will pronounce its sentence on Jan. 22," he said on condition of anonymity.
The court's verdict came after the country's premier probe agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation, filed a charge sheet against the accused for their role in the illegal recruitment of the teachers by using forged documents. The charge sheet was submitted to the court in 2008.
Chautala, the son of India's former Deputy Prime Minister Chaudhari Devi Lal, ruled Haryana from December 1989 to May 1990, from July 1990 to July 1990, again from March 1991 to April 1991 and finally from July 1999 to March 2005.
He is currently the leader of Opposition Indian National Lok Dal in the state.
