The US Air Force Space Command expects to add 1,000 new people, representing over 15 percent of its current team of cyber professionals for the 2014 fiscal year, American Forces Press Service reported on Friday.

US Air Force General William Shelton, the Commander of the Air Force Space Command, said the Command will be tapped for over 1,000 additional people into the cyber business in over two years beginning in 2014 fiscal year.

This will represent about more than 15 percent increase over 6, 000 cyber professionals currently working for the Command, he said, adding that 70 percent to 80 percent of the new blood could be civilians.

Shelton said the year of 2012 saw "a pretty good move into cyber" to show progression and "grasping the reins of the cyber capabilities of the Air Force."

But he noted that the hires come when budget restrictions allow the increase in personnel, and one of his biggest problems in planning for the future is the uncertainty of the Defense Department budget process.
