Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is due to visit Egypt's capital of Cairo on Feb. 6-7 at the invitation of his Egyptian counterpart Mohamed Morsi, semi- official Fars news agency reported Wednesday.

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi was quoted by the report as saying that "Mr. Ahmadinejad will visit Egypt at the invitation of Mr. Morsi to take part in the summit of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC)."

Stressing that the two countries are serious to resume bilateral ties at the highest level, Salehi said that "All our efforts are in line with the further expansion of the relations between the two countries and fortunately the two states' ties are progressing and moving forward well."

The relation between Egypt and Iran were cut off for over three decades after Egypt signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1979, but the two sides started to get closer after the 2011 unrest that toppled Egypt's former leader Hosni Mubarak.

Iran persists that the two countries need to take further steps to normalize ties in the future.
