Local firefighters rescued a man who set fire to an apartment in Baoshan district early Tuesday after he attempted to commit suicide, police said Tuesday.

Neighbors reported that the man's fifth floor apartment on Xinhu Road was on fire around 3 am, according to a report on the local news website xinmin.cn.

Firefighters arrived and evacuated residents from the building. The fire was put out within an hour, according to the report.

The man, in his 40s, was distraught over his recent divorce, during which a court ruled that the couple's apartment legally belonged to his ex-wife, said Zeng Ni, a press officer with the Baoshan District Public Security Bureau.

Zeng told the Global Times that the man, who was in his 40s, cut himself and set the apartment on fire.
