Shanghai Customs has caught passengers carrying excessive amounts of undeclared cash 85 times this year, local media reported Tuesday. The undeclared money in the cases totaled more than 40 million yuan ($6.42 million).
The agency also found travelers carrying 20,000 undeclared items, including luxury handbags and watches. Goods for personal use worth more than 5,000 yuan are not exempt from import taxes.
Foreigners are not allowed to enter the country with more than $5,000 in cash, and Chinese citizens are not allowed to take more than 20,000 yuan in or out of the Chinese mainland. Travelers carrying more than those amounts must fill out a declaration form.
