Nagasaki voices protest against underground nuclear test

The southwestern Japanese city of Nagasaki expressed its strong concern on Tuesday after media reported the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) conducted its third nuclear test, city officials said.

Nagasaki Mayor Tomihisa Taue released a statement following the latest reports that the DPRK carried out its underground nuclear bomb test on Tuesday according to a spokesperson at the city's Peace Promotion Section.

The mayor told reporters that he, as a representative of an atomic-bombed city, opposes any moves that could create more tension in the northeast Asian region, urging the DPRK to cooperate with international community to advance universal nuclear disarmament so that countries in the world can achieve a world without nuclear weapons.

The mayor is expected to send a letter of protest also to leaders of the DPRK later on the day, protesting its nuclear test.
