Venezuela Monday congratulated Iran on the 34th anniversary of its Islamic revolution that toppled the US-backed regime of Shah and led to the founding of an Islamic republic under the leadership of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

In a statement released Monday by its foreign ministry, Venezuela said the Islamic revolution overthrew the "pro-imperialist monarchy in February 1979, becoming a model and revolutionary hope for all peoples who fight for their emancipation."

Meanwhile, the Venezuelan government reaffirmed its solidarity with Iran and with its President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has twice visited Caracas and signed with his Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chavez more than 70 agreements in finance, energy, industry and technology.

Iran has been struggling with economic sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union, which suspect Iran of pursuing a nuclear weapons program. Iran has said its nuclear program is for peaceful energy purpose only.

Venezuela also reaffirmed its commitment to working with Iran "toward the construction of a multipolar world, without any type of hegemony."

"The Islamic Revolution marks 34 years of defeating aggression, of successfully making progress in social and economic development plans, and of consolidating the foundations of independence and sovereignty, for the right to development and peace," the statement added.
