Wheelchair tennis legend Vergeer ends career

Esther Vergeer has decided to finish her career as wheelchair tennis player, the 31-year-old Dutch women announced while presenting her biography in Rotterdam on Tuesday.

Vergeer possesses an impressive list of achievements. She grabbed seven Paralympic gold medals, including four in the singles event in 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012. She also won 27 Grand Slam tournament titles. After the Paralympics in London she took time to rest and to reflect.

In January 2013 Vergeer lost her last match and her unbeaten streak stopped at 470 matches. She had been the world's No. 1 since 1999. Vergeer played a total of 692 singles matches in her career, of which she lost 25.
