Pakistan's annual desert jeep rally to start Friday

Pakistan's biggest motor sports event "Cholistan Desert Jeep Rally 2013" is to start on Friday in the country's eastern province of Punjab, the official said Tuesday.

The Tourism Development Corporation of Punjab (TDCP) will organize the 8th desert jeep rally from Feb. 15 to 17 in Cholistan, Pakistan's 26,300 square kilometers wide desert bordering India.

General Manager Operations of TDCP Muhammad Tanveer Jabbar told Xinhua on Tuesday that at least 100 jeeps with experienced and emerging drivers from around the country would participate in the three-day annual competition.

"The participants of the rally will be provided with best available facilities including security and medical help," said Jabber.

The annual event which was inaugurated in 2005 has become a great source of attraction not only for participants but also for tourists as it displays the cultural and historical heritage of Cholistan desert.

The managers of the event hoped that more than 100,000 tourists from around the country would hopefully come to witness the three- day event.

The rally not only provides entertainment to the tourists but also helps locals of Cholistan to earn money through temporary shops and cultural activities.

All the participating vehicles are divided into four categories for 224 kilometers long route competition.

The final round of the rally would be held on Feb. 17 followed by a prize ceremony in the evening.

The winner of the rally will be awarded a trophy along with Rs 200,000 (2,000 US dollars) cash prize while second and third position holders will receive 1,500 US dollars and 1,000 US dollars respectively.
