Road accidents kill 43 Cambodians during Chinese New Year travel

Road accidents had killed 43 Cambodian people and injured 165 others during Chinese New Year travel on Feb. 9-12, according to a report of the Interior Ministry's public order department on Wednesday.

A total of 93 road accidents had occurred throughout Cambodia on the occasion, the report said, adding that the accidents were caused by speeding driving, reckless driving, alcohol driving and overtaking and traffic law violation.

Chinese New Year is not a public holiday in Cambodia, but the majority of the population celebrates the event by traveling to visit their families in their hometowns or going to tourism destinations throughout the country.

A terrible accident during the occasion was a crash between a Camry-branded car and an oil tanker truck on Monday in Southwestern part of Cambodia, killing all six people in the Camry- branded car.

Road accidents killed at least 1,894 people in Cambodia in 2012, according to the report. Besides the dead, more than 7,000 others were injured.
