The Malaysian Information Department denied it has issued any statement announcing the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Razak in statements posted on government websites.

Two government websites that distribute official information, e- Akhbar and e-Press, had published statements alleging the prime minister officially steps down.

The statements were widely circulated on social networking websites.

The websites were suspected to have been hacked and the Information Department has lodged a police report, department director general Ibrahim Abdul Rahman said.

"The Information Department Malaysia has taken immediate action by removing the false statements from both systems," he said in a statement.

Government websites had been the target of hackers in the past.

In June 2011, unknown hackers launched a DDoS or distributed denial-of-service attack against 51 government websites, disrupting access to the portals by swamping them with traffic from hundreds or thousands of computers.
