At least a civilian was killed and several others injured in a clash between residents and soldiers in a southern village in Cote d'Ivoire over alleged extortion, security and other sources told Xinhua on Monday.

Confrontations erupted in the village of Affery, about 100 km from the economic capital Abidjan.

A gendarmerie told Xinhua that a young person was shot and killed in the clash between the villagers and the soldiers of the Cote d'Ivoire Republican Forces (FRCI), who shot into the air to disperse a crowd of young protesters.

A resident of the village said two people were killed and many others injured.

He said the protest was prompted by a soldier demanding village shops pay some taxes. The verbal exchange between the soldier and a shop owner angered young villagers who beat the soldier.

His fellow soldiers learnt of the incident and rushed to the scene to disperse the crowd by firing into the air.

Affery is dominated by supporters of ex-president Laurent Gbagbo, who is on trial in The Hague for a five-month violence after the presidential election in November 2010.

The post-election bloodlet claimed 3,000 lives as a result of his refusal to concede defeat to Alassane Ouattara.

Affery had previously witnessed deadly confrontations between the villagers and the FRCI soldiers, who killed two civilians in June last year.

Hostilities were reported again in December 2012, when residents demanded the replacement of the FRCI by police and gendarmes.
