A local taxi driver will be sent to two years of compulsory drug detention and rehabilitation for driving under the influence of narcotics, police said Tuesday.

Pudong New Area police arrested the driver, who was not identified, after a passenger reported his poor driving and uncouth behavior to authorities, according to a report in the Youth Daily.

The passenger, a woman in her 60s surnamed Zhu, got in the driver's taxi with her 5-year-old grandson around 7:30 pm Sunday to return to her residential complex near the intersection of Dongfang and Longyang roads in Pudong, the report said.

After turning onto Nanmatou Road, the driver became agitated and starting yelling at Zhu when she questioned why he was driving the wrong way on one-way street. She called the police before reaching her destination. Once she arrived at her destination, she got out of the taxi and told the driver she wouldn't pay the fare until police arrived."I thought that the driver seemed a bit strange when I got in the taxi because he couldn't even speak clearly," Zhu told the Global Times.

Zhu said the driver pushed her grandson as he was getting out of the taxi and locked the door behind him.

Officers took the driver into custody and gave him a urinalysis, which showed he had been using drugs, said Ji Xiaoyi, a press officer for the Pudong Public Security Bureau. Police didn't disclose which drug the driver was suspected of using.

The driver, who is in his 40s, had been arrested on drug abuse charges in 1995. He was hired by Punan Taxi Company in 2011, according to the news report.

Zhu said a manager from the Punan Taxi Company apologized to her Tuesday.
