Japanese Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso will attend the presidential inauguration of South Korea's President-elect Park Geun-hye on February 25, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Wednesday.

Park tightly won the South Korean presidential election held last December and became the country's first female president.

Suga said at a press conference that Aso's participation in the ceremony can be considered as the Japanese government's effort to mend relations with South Korea, adding Aso maintains close ties and trust with South Korea.

Suga also said that the two neighbors share basic values and interests and Japan will push forward a "future-oriented" bilateral relationship.

Relations between Japan and South Korea soured for disputed islands in the Sea of Japan. The South Korea-controlled islets are known as Dokdo in the country and Takeshima Islands in Japan.

A record 18 Diet members will participate in Japan's annual " Takeshima Day," a ceremony commemorating the Takeshima Islands, on February 22, only three days before Aso's visit to South Korea.

Suga said the Japanese government will dispatch Aiko Shimajiri, a parliamentary secretary for the Cabinet Office, to attend the event, which will be held in Matsue city in Shimane Prefecture.

Shimajiri will be the first occupant of one of the top three posts for lawmakers in a government ministry to attend the event since it commenced in 2006, said Japanese media.

South Korea on Tuesday urged the Japanese side to cancel the event, adding it will be regrettable if Shimajiri attend the ceremony.
