Indonesia plans to raise milk imports, as domestic output falls

Indonesia's milk production has decreased gradually in recent years, forcing the country to raise milk imports to meet domestic demand, an official with the country 's milk industry association said here on Thursday.

Hitherto, the production of domestic milk has decreased by 25 percent, said Chairman of Indonesia National Milk Council Teguh Budiana, adding currently domestic milk production could only meet 25 percent of the national total demand, with the rest being supplemented by imports.

The chairman explained that the decline of domestic milk production was due to the fact that many local cow have been slaughtered for meat.

The importation of milk would be more in the form of milk powder, he added.
