Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRCS) has opened new building of first aid camp at the 115th mile rest area on the Yangon-Nay Pyi Taw-Mandalay Expressway on Tuesday, official media reported Wednesday.

The MRCS offers 24-hour first-aid with pre-hospital care and ambulance services.

Under the supervision of MRCS and with the contribution of Singapore Red Cross Society (SRCS), the construction started in September 2012 and completed in January 2013 at a cost of about 20 million Kyats( over $23,000).

SRCS also donated an ambulance and a one-year salary for four staff.

Many traffic accidents occurred on Yangon-Nay Pyi Taw-Mandalay expressway, resulting many deaths due to reckless driving.

To reduce traffic accidents along the expressway, Expressway Police Corps was formed in January this year and fourteen police posts have been stationed along the expressway.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Construction will upgrade the expressway into an international standard one and plans are underway to upgrade the expressway into four-lane each motorway, to repave and set up barriers along the expressway.

Construction of 587.29 kilometers expressway started on October 2005.

During the period from July to December 2012, 51 were killed and 132 injured in 86 road accidents on the expressway.
