Shanghai collected 24,240 units of blood cell donations in 2012, up 17.52 percent from 2011. The number has been gradually increasing since 2002, when blood component donation was initiated in Shanghai. Blood component donation means the blood will be transferred back to the donor after curtain components, such as blood cells are extracted by a machine.
