Wellington College, a well-known British boarding school, will open a branch campus in Pudong New Area in August 2014, local media reported Thursday.

In its first year, the local school, Wellington College International Shanghai, will admit 1,500 students from the expatriate community, according to a report in the Shanghai Morning Post.

Chinese law forbids foreign schools from enrolling Chinese citizens unless they hold a foreign passport, according to the school's admission policies.

Wellington College International Shanghai, which will be located next to the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center, aims to provide K-12 education for expat children whose parents work in Shanghai. The news report estimated that tuition would cost about 200,000 yuan ($32,122) per year.

The standards for the school's teachers will be high, said Qiao Ying, the school's director. "A teacher must have a British teaching certificate and experience working at a well-known school to teach at Wellington College International Shanghai," Qiao told the Global Times. "Ninety percent of our teachers will come from Britain. Some of them will be dispatched from the home school."

Wellington College was established in 1853 as a memorial to the Duke of Wellington, according to the school's website.
