Swarms of locusts migrating from southern Egypt covered the sky in parts of the capital Cairo on Saturday, according to Xinhua reporter at scene.

"The massive flocks of dark reddish locusts covered the sky in this area and the residents set fire to tires to disperse them and kept the doors, windows and balconies of their houses locked," Amr Salah, a Xinhua reporter near the Helwan town said.

Reports from the agriculture ministry said that the locusts pass through Egypt during their migration from northeast Sudan to Saudi Arabia, reaffirming Egypt is just "a transfer station" for them. The reports said that the ministry combated about 80 percent of the guest locusts.

For his part, Mohamed Tawfik, agriculture minister's adviser, told state TV that specialized teams of the ministry have already started dealing with the locusts that landed by sunset.

"The residents should neither panic nor set fire to tires to disperse them," Tawfik warned, saying that the locusts did not harm any agricultural crops since they appeared in Egypt a couple of days ago and they will disappear in the coming few hours.
