Deputies to the 12th National People’s Congress, or the NPC, have gathered in Beijing on Monday and have set the agenda for the legislative sessions. Let’s run through some of the highlights of the session.

According to the agenda, deputies will elect and decide on the new leadership, including the chairman of the 12th NPC Standing Committee, the country’s president, the premier, the chairman of the Central Military Commission, as well as heads of the Supreme People’s Court and the Supreme People’s Procuratorate.

The State Council has so far made 12 adjustment to its departments and functions. In 2008, departments like the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology were established. At this year’s session, the plan on institutional and function restructuring of the State Council will also be up for deliberation.

Social issues that concern the public will also be heavily discussed. Delegates will hear and deliberate the government’s work report, as well as the work reports of the NPC Standing Committee, the Supreme People’s Court and the Supreme People’s Procuratorate. They will also examine the report on the national economic and social development plan, and the central budget.
