Italy's center-left poised for new elections without deal with other parties

Italy's center-left Democratic Party (PD) said on Thursday Italian voters will have to go to the polls again later this year if the PD alliance led by Pier Luigi Bersani fails to reach an agreement on forming a new government with the anti-status-quo Five-Star Movement (M5S).

Stefano Fassina, the PD's economic spokesman, said it would be impossible to let another technocrat government like the emergency cabinet of outgoing Prime Minister Mario Monti to govern at this moment.

The democrats "are not willing to enter any agreement" with center-right People of Freedom (PdL) led by former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, Fassina told local radio.

"If the conditions are not there for a government of change with the M5S, then it will be necessary to have new elections," he said.

"If you want to try for a government that continues the Monti agenda, which was resoundingly rejected by the voters, I say it's better to have new elections," he added.

The PD chief had already ruled out forming a symbolic coalition with Berlusconi and his allies. On Wednesday, Bersani put forward an eight-point platform for a "government of change" that contains some points similar to the M5S's manifesto, including cuts of the number of lawmakers and introduction of a universal system of unemployment benefits.

Bersani's coalition obtained narrow win in general election on Feb. 24-25 but failed to get a working majority in senate after center right came a close second and ex-comedian Beppe Grillo's M5S gained from 8 million "protest voters."

Grillo, whose movement holds the balance of power in parliament, has denied mainstream politicians and said several times he would not back a government led by Bersani or Berlusconi.
