The Philippine government said on Friday that it has put in place additional security measures to thwart any attacks that may be launched by the leftist New People's Army (NPA).

The pronouncement was made following the collapse of the peace talks between the Philippine government and the National Democratic Front (NDF). The NDF is the political wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines and the NPA.

Deputy presidential spokesman Abigail Valte said police and military personnel have increased their presence in areas where the NPAs are allegedly extorting money from candidates in the mid- term elections in May.

Malacanang, the presidential palace, has admitted that the peace talks with NDF collapsed last month.

The Philippine government is awaiting advice from third party facilitator Norway on the next course of action to take.
