The South Korean news agency says that the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea has conducted a pair of short-range missile tests, amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

Yonhap News Agency, quoting South Korean military officials, reported that the DPRK launched two KN-02 missiles on Friday. The DPRK army had been conducting ammunition drills in the eastern waters of the peninsula.

Earlier, the leader of the DPRK, Kim Jong Un, oversaw live ammunition drills meant to test the capability of artillery batteries under battle conditions. The exercises were reportedly aimed at the islands of Baengnyeong and Yeonpyeong that lie just south of the Northern Limit Line.

Analysts say the missile launch and the ammunition drills are a response to the US-South Korean joint military exercise "Key Resolve". The South Korean Defense Ministry announced in a statement that Seoul is closely monitoring the situation in Pyongyang, and is ready for any provocations from the DPRK.
