Up to 625,000 news jobs will be created in Sydney by 2031 as part of a New South Wales (NSW) Government plan announced by the state's Planning and Infrastructure Minister Brad Hazzard on Tuesday.

Hazzard says the draft Metropolitan Strategy for Sydney sets out a new plan for the city's future over the next two decades.

Sydney is expected to have 1.3 million additional residents by 2031, up from 4.3 million people at the present, according to the minister.

"The NSW Government is committed to delivering homes, jobs and making NSW the number one place to do business," Hazzard said in a statement.

"We are delivering infrastructure to support 545,000 new homes in Sydney, releasing new land so families can achieve the dream of owning a home with a backyard."

Hazzard says the government wants to see more than 300,000 jobs created in Western Sydney as it is the center of the state's economic strategy to drive growth and prosperity for the city.

"Community consultation is the key and the draft strategy is on exhibition until 31 May 2013, all Sydneysiders should have a say on their future,"he said.
