At least two people including a Buddhist monk have been killed and four others injured Wednesday in a community violence triggered by gold trading in a private shop in Meikhtila, Mandalay region, in which dispute occurred between the shop owner and a customer, local media reported Thursday.

Violence was sparked Wednesday afternoon after about 200 people, with dissatisfaction over the trading, started to destroy the shop and some other shops nearby, the police was quoted by the Biweekly Eleven News as saying.

The violence, seen as being turned into a form of religious dispute, spread shortly with a mosque being burned down in the township.

In the incident, some 10 private motor cycles were also put ablaze, it said.

Local authorities issued a curfew order at 9 p.m.local time Wednesday night, banning gathering of people in a bid to restore law and order.

The situation in Meikhtila is so far calm following imposition of the order as claimed by the authorities.
